Title
"Improving the Well-Being of Africa's Children: Site Visits in South Africa and Ethiopia, 2007"
Speaker
As a Developmental Psychologist, Dr. Koester's primary research interests focus on the early years of life, particularly parent-infant interactions when either the child or the parent is deaf. In addition, she is Director of the Intercultural Youth and Family Development graduate program and is therefore also concerned with cultural variations in parenting, child development, and efforts to improve the quality of life for children in extreme circumstances.
Time & Venue
4:10pm GBB L14.
Abstract
In this presentation, I will describe a number of programs and grassroots agencies in South Africa and Ethiopia that I was able to visit during my Sabbatical last year. These are all non-governmental organizations dedicated to addressing the needs of children such as those with HIV/AIDS, street children, orphans, and autistic children. The purpose of these site visits was to identify specific programs where UM students might find appropriate and challenging internship or volunteer opportunities in the future.
