Description:

My primary area of research interest is in   the health correlates of being part of a stigmatized minority group.   Specifically, I have studied substance use disorders and other   psychopathologies of sexual minorities (gay, lesbian, bisexual, and   transgender individuals) and homeless adolescent populations. My   work is framed within a contextual model that takes into account the   unique experiences of identifying as part of a marginalized segment   of society. I also study aspects of psychotherapy process, including   the reciprocal experiences of psychotherapy “burnout” among high   utilizers of services and their providers. A recent study   investigates the experience of clients encountering their therapists   unexpectedly outside of the therapy setting. As a practitioner, I   work with adult clients who present with a variety of behavior   disorders as well as problems in living. I am a   relationship-oriented therapist who draws upon evidence-based   approaches when applicable to the particular client’s problem.

Information Regarding Current Graduate Students:

My current research lab consists of five graduate students: Annesa Flentje and Abby Kiklevich are post-Master's level students. Noah Baker, Robert Enoch, and Nick Heck are pre-Master's students. In the presentation and publication list below, graduate students co-authors and co-presenters are in bold.

Congratulations to Annesa Flentje, who was awarded a 2008 Roy Scrivner small grant from the American Psychological Foundation (APF) for her dissertation study!
