School Psychology : Curriculum

Ed.S. Coursework
Ph.D. Coursework

Example Coursework Sequence for Ed.S. Program of Study

The Educational Specialist (Ed.S.) program requires approximately 72 credit hours and entails a three-year course of study. The first two years consist of full-time coursework and school-based practica experiences. During the third year, students will complete a one year internship in a school setting. Students must also pass a written comprehensive examination at the end of their second year on campus.

Ed.S. students typically complete paid internships in public school district. NASP requires a 1,200 hour internship, with at least 600 hours completed in a school setting.

The following is an example of program coursework that may be subject to change. Your program advisor will consult with you before each semester in regards to courses.

Example of Coursework Sequence for Ph.D. Program

The Ph.D. program in School Psychology is a five-year course of study. The aim of the program is to produce the next generation of leading academic scholars and professionals. Graduates of the doctoral program will be trained as proactive agents of change by advancing the field through research, practice, and service. Ph.D. school psychologists advocate for effective services and assist in educating policy makers about evidence-based practices .The goal is advocating positive academic, social, and behavioral outcomes for children, families and communities. While the Ed.S. program primarily prepares students to work in the schools, the Ph.D. degree prepares psychologists to work in a variety of professional settings like public and private schools, colleges and universities, pediatric clinics and hospitals, and public agencies.

Program objectives are divided into two types: knowledge competencies and performance competencies. Knowledge competencies will be evaluated through coursework performance evaluations (e.g. exams, projects), a Masters  Thesis, passing a written comprehensive examination, and a Dissertation. Performance competencies will be evaluated through research activities and various school and clinic-based fieldwork.

Ph.D. students are required to do an APA internship, unless an exception is made via the program. The internship must be at least 1,600 hours. APPIC provides a directory of all registered internships.
